A Mixtape, not a route or a review · Golden Bay, top of the South
Golden Bay sits over the Tākaka Hill — a genuinely slow, winding hour of driving that filters out a lot of casual traffic and keeps the bay quieter than Abel Tasman just over the hill. Wharariki Beach is the one name most people already know; the rest of this mix is built around spots most Abel Tasman visitors never bother crossing the hill to see.

Reached by a gravel road to a car park, then roughly a 20-minute walk over farmland and dunes with no facilities at the beach itself — that walk-in is most of what keeps it quiet compared with Abel Tasman's beaches an hour or so away. Check tide and weather before the walk in; there's nothing at the beach to shelter under if it turns.
NIWA measured underwater visibility here at 63 metres in 1993 — the only water measured clearer anywhere is the near-frozen Weddell Sea in Antarctica. No swimming, wading, or touching the water is allowed, out of both ecological necessity and respect for its cultural significance to Manawhenua ki Mohua — this is a look-don't-touch stop, walkway only.
Gannets almost always nest on rocky outcrops; Farewell Spit's colony, home to around 9,000 birds each season (roughly September–April), is the exception, sitting right at sea level. Independent access on foot is limited to the first 4km of the spit — reaching the colony itself requires a licensed 4WD tour, timed around the tides, from Collingwood.
A 3.4km return walking track through native bush and nikau palms to a 20-metre waterfall, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes round trip including a swing bridge crossing. It gets busy in summer; autumn is genuinely the quieter, still-warm option if timing is flexible.
Under 60km from Riwaka to Tākaka, but the marble-mountain road takes a full hour of winding driving — treat the crossing as the activity, not just the way in. Hawkes Lookout is a 15-minute return walk from a car park just before Ngarua Caves, and the caves themselves run guided tours (hourly in summer, book ahead in winter) past a moa skeleton display.
A 15-minute drive from Tākaka plus a 60–90 minute return walk to a cave entrance roughly 40 metres wide. Its stalactites curve outward rather than hanging straight down — a phenomenon called phytokarst, caused by moss and fern growth on the sunlit side of the formations, and genuinely unusual even against other NZ limestone caves.

Technically yes for one or two of these stops, but the Tākaka Hill crossing alone eats an hour each way — trying to fit more than two or three tracks into a single day trip means rushing the walk-ins that make most of these spots worth doing.
The Farewell Spit gannet colony tour is capped and needs advance booking; Ngarua Caves tours need booking in winter (June–September) but run walk-up hourly in summer. Wharariki, Pupu Springs and Wainui Falls are all self-guided with no booking required.
