A Mixtape, not a route or a review · Hanmer Springs, North Canterbury
Hanmer Springs is built around one thing — the thermal pools — and most overnight visitors never leave the pool complex to see what's around it. This is a short mix on purpose: enough for a genuine one- or two-night stay, not padded out to look like a bigger destination than it is.

Twenty-two outdoor geothermal pools ranging 32–42°C: the Aquatherapy pools sit at a moderate 36–37°C, the Cascade pools run hotter at 37–42°C. If you want a long soak rather than a quick hot dip, start at the cooler end — the 40°C-plus pools are genuinely hard to stay in for long.
A 45–60 minute return walk on a well-maintained zigzag track to a 360-degree shelter looking over the village and the Southern Alps behind it. Short enough to do the same afternoon you arrive, before or after the pools.
A roughly 2-hour return walk from the Mullans Road car park through mountain beech forest to a 41-metre waterfall — genuinely a proper walk, not a five-minute stroll, and the better pick over Conical Hill if you want your legs tired before getting back in the pools. Loop back via the Spur Track and Fir Trail rather than returning the same way, if you've got the extra 20–30 minutes.
An 1887 single-lane heritage suspension bridge over the Waiau River gorge, about 8km south of town — it's now best known for the 35-metre bungy jump run off it, but the bridge itself is a Grade 1 heritage structure worth the stop even if jumping off it isn't your thing.
Every regional Mixtape gets a real Spotify playlist to go with it — North Canterbury and wider NZ artists mixed in with tracks that fit a slow soak-and-walk overnight, sequenced like an actual mixtape rather than a generic "road trip vibes" list. Follow it, take it with you.
Playlist coming soon — curating the real Hanmer Springs mix.
One night covers the pools plus one proper walk (Conical Hill or Dog Stream); two nights lets you do both walks unrushed and add the bridge on the way out — worth the second night if walking is as much the point of the trip as the pools.
Not for general entry outside peak periods, but the private pools and treatments do need advance booking, and general admission can queue up on weekends and school holidays — turning up mid-morning on a Saturday in the middle of a Canterbury school holiday is the one timing mistake worth avoiding.
A route page tells you how to drive somewhere. A journal post argues one specific honest take. A Mixtape does neither — it's the mix of everything worth knowing about a place, pulled across themes, in one spot. This one's deliberately short — Hanmer doesn't need padding to earn an overnight.
