A Mixtape, not a route or a review · Nelson / Tasman
Nelson Tasman is the only place in New Zealand that grows hops commercially, produces roughly 30% of the country's apples and pears, and has an entire wharf town built around a smokehouse — this is a food trail with actual agricultural weight behind it, not just a cluster of nice cafés. It pairs naturally with the Marlborough Wine Train mix for anyone doing the top of the South in one loop.

Riwaka, just outside Motueka, is the centre of New Zealand's hop-growing industry, and the varieties bred here — Riwaka, Nelson Sauvin, Motueka, Nectaron — are used by name by brewers internationally. Sprig & Fern started here and now has more than ten locations across the region; the Richmond taproom near Beach Road is the original base to start from.
Running since 1978, every Saturday 8am–1pm, 200-plus stalls — produce, cheese, and street food alongside the crafts and art. Go early if the point is the food stalls specifically; by late morning it's as much a craft market as a food one.
A former fruit-export wharf on the Waimea Estuary, now cafés, a brewery and a wine bar in the old cool-store buildings — The Smokehouse is the anchor, hot-smoking fish over manuka in traditional brick kilns. It gets genuine queues on fine weekends; this isn't a quiet-arrival kind of place in summer.
Nelson Tasman is the country's second-largest apple- and pear-growing region, concentrated around Riwaka, Motueka and Moutere. Apple-picking season runs roughly mid-February through into autumn; boysenberry and other pick-your-own seasons sit earlier in summer — check a specific orchard's dates before driving out, they vary year to year with the weather.
A cycle trail network connecting Nelson, Richmond, Māpua and Motueka, built to link breweries, cafés and the wharf rather than just scenery — the realistic way to do two or three of the above tracks in one day without needing a designated driver for the beer stops.

Every regional Mixtape gets a real Spotify playlist to go with it — Nelson Tasman and wider NZ artists mixed in with tracks that just fit a slow food-and-market day, sequenced like an actual mixtape rather than a generic "road trip vibes" list. Follow it, take it with you.
Playlist coming soon — curating the real Nelson mix.
It has its own wine industry (mostly Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and aromatic whites), but it's genuinely smaller than Marlborough's — the honest reason to come here is the hops, orchards and the wharf, not to chase the same grape story a second time.
Nelson city has the most food and market options within walking distance; Motueka sits closer to the orchards, hop fields and Māpua, and cuts real driving time if that's the bulk of your itinerary. Richmond is the middle ground and the Sprig & Fern home base, but has the least to do on foot.
A route page tells you how to drive Nelson Tasman. A journal post argues one specific honest take. A Mixtape does neither — it's the mix of everything worth knowing about a region, pulled across themes, in one place. Build your own by picking themes from the homepage grid, or start from a region-specific one like this.
