Generic NZ-style cove, not literally Cathedral Cove. Photo: Valentin Lacoste / Unsplash. Swap for a real shot before publishing.
Cathedral Cove is on almost every New Zealand itinerary that includes the Coromandel, and it's easy to see why: the arched rock passage between two beaches is a striking spot. It's also, by mid-morning in summer, one of the most crowded short walks in the country, with a queue at the arch itself and a car park that fills before most people have had breakfast.
What the postcard doesn't show you
The walk in is longer than people expect if you haven't checked in advance, and the cove itself gets packed at peak times. Access has also been affected by storm damage in recent years, so check current track conditions before you build a whole day around it.
Where we'd send you instead
The Coromandel has several coves with the same limestone cliffs and native bush, and far less foot traffic. We're naming these specifically once we've walked them ourselves and confirmed current access. Check back soon.
The honest version of "hidden gem" content names the place. If we're not confident enough in a spot to name it specifically, we don't publish it as a recommendation.
The bit nobody publishes: real time and cost
Cathedral Cove: free to access, 30-minute walk each way from the car park, car park is NZD $2 per hour in summer and full by 10 am. Hot Water Beach: free, but the spade rental is NZD $5 from the dairy in Hahei and you need to time the tide within 2 hours of low. New Chums Beach: free, 30-minute walk from the car park at the end of Whangapoua Road. The whole loop is 4 to 5 hours including the swims, NZD $0 to $10 depending on whether you bought a spade. There is no scenario where this region costs more than NZD $20 a day for entry fees and parking.
If you still want Cathedral Cove
It's still worth seeing once. Go at first light, well before the tour groups arrive, or take the water taxi instead of the walking track if you want to avoid the crowds on land. Either way, budget it as a morning, not a quick stop.
See Cathedral Cove if it's your first Coromandel trip and you want the classic shot, but go early, and don't make it the only cove you visit. The quieter alternatives are where the peninsula actually shows itself.
