FAQ

What's the difference between the four beach lists (Best Beaches, Beaches by Coast, Beaches to Swim At, and Beaches for Kids)?

Best Beaches is the general flagship list, a mixed set of standout beaches for different reasons. Beaches by Coast sorts beaches by which coastline they're on, useful if you're already road-tripping one side of the country and want options nearby rather than the single best beach in the whole country. Beaches to Swim At filters specifically for sheltered, patrolled water rather than looks, and Beaches for Kids filters further again for shallow water and a full day's worth of things to do with children. If swimming or kids are the actual point of the day, skip the general list and go straight to the one built for that.

Is there a real difference between Best Wine Regions and Best Wineries?

Best Wine Regions ranks the regions themselves, Marlborough, Central Otago, Hawke's Bay and others, useful for deciding where to base a wine trip. Best Wineries ranks individual producers across those regions, useful once you already know where you're staying and want specific cellar doors to book. Start with Regions if you haven't picked a base yet; go to Wineries once you have.

What's the difference between Best Day Walks, Best Walks & Hikes, and Best Overnight Hikes?

Best Day Walks is the narrowest list: three to six hours, no hut booking, back at the car by dinner. Best Walks & Hikes is broader and mixes shorter walks in with some longer, more serious hikes. Best Overnight Hikes is the one that actually requires a hut or campsite booking, for a genuine multi-day tramp. If you don't want to book a hut, stay on the Day Walks list and skip the other two.
